In 1993, Prof. J. B. Shukla with nine other faculty members from various disciplines at the Institute of Technology Kanpur realized the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration and founded Indian Academy of Mathematical Modeling in Engineering and Sciences. On getting support from many scientists across the country, this Academy was renamed in 1996 as 'Indian Society for Mathematical Modeling and Computer Simulation' with Prof. Roddam Narasimha as its first President and Prof. J. B. Shukla as the first General Secretary. The Society aims to promote the application of Mathematical Modeling and Computer Simulation in all branches of knowledge. To achieve this objective, the Society organizes conferences, symposia, seminars and training programmes on a regular basis to facilitate dissemination of research conducted in these areas and to promote intellectual exchange among practitioners of the science and art of Mathematical Modeling and Simulation. It is a non-profit society registered with the Registrar of Societies, Kanpur. The Society has Headquarters at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Kanpur.
